Choosing content management systems.

There are many content management systems available including ready made systems, website designers systems and custom solutions for a particular customer. It is important to always try out a content management system before choosing it. Some considerations include:

• Is it easy to use?
• Does it allow you to change text and pictures on any page?
• Does it have particular hosting requirements? In particular are you free to host it anywhere or can it only be hosted on your web designer’s server?
• Are there any incremental costs for using it?
• How secure is it? (the last thing you want is a competitor editing your site).
• Make sure you understand who owns what and if the relationship with the web designer breaks down can you continue to use the content management system?

Most web designers offer online content management systems, which are usually based around MySQL/PHP or SQL/ASP. Online CMS websites are usually sold on their benefits to the customer, but they provide great benefits to the web designers also. In particular they can be used to make the customer dependant upon the web designer.
